The most common reason parents don't pursue medical tourism isn't fear of surgery abroad — it's logistics. "What do I do with my kids?"
The answer depends on your situation, but the options are better than most parents expect. Colombia is a family-oriented culture with excellent childcare infrastructure, kid-friendly environments, and activities that keep children happy while a parent recovers.
Option 1: Leave the Kids at Home
For major procedures with significant recovery demands (BBL, mommy makeover, joint replacement), leaving children with a trusted caregiver at home is often the best choice. You can focus entirely on healing without managing bedtime routines, school schedules, and the emotional toll of a child seeing a parent in post-surgical discomfort.
When this makes sense:
- Children under 5 who need constant attention
- Major cosmetic procedures with visible swelling, bruising, or drains that may frighten young children
- Procedures requiring strict rest (BBL sitting restrictions, tummy tuck mobility limitations)
- Your recovery house doesn't accommodate children
Logistics:
- Colombia is the same timezone as the US East Coast — FaceTime and bedtime calls work perfectly
- Trip length for most procedures: 10–21 days. Manageable for a co-parent, grandparent, or trusted friend caring for kids at home.
- Many parents plan their trip during school terms when kids are in a routine, minimizing disruption
Option 2: Bring the Kids Along
For shorter procedures with lighter recoveries (dental work, LASIK, hair transplant, minor cosmetic), bringing children can work — especially if a partner or companion is traveling with you to handle childcare during your procedure and early recovery.
When this works:
- You're traveling with a partner or companion who can supervise children full-time for 2–3 days post-procedure
- Your procedure has minimal recovery (dental, LASIK — you're functional within 24–48 hours)
- Children are school-age (6+) and can entertain themselves with devices, books, and structured activities
- You're combining a family vacation with a minor procedure
Childcare options in Colombia:
- Hotel childcare services: Some upscale hotels in El Poblado and Usaquén offer babysitting services or kids' clubs. Confirm availability and age ranges when booking.
- Private bilingual nannies: Available through agencies in Medellín and Bogotá. Rates: $30–60/day for a full-day bilingual sitter. Book through your patient coordinator or search expat forums for recommendations.
- Your travel companion: The most common solution. One parent has surgery; the other parent takes the kids to the Botanical Garden, Parque Explora (Medellín's interactive science museum), or the zoo.
Kid-Friendly Activities in Medellín
Medellín is one of the most family-friendly cities in Latin America. While one parent recovers, the other parent and kids have plenty to explore:
- Parque Explora — Interactive science museum with a planetarium and aquarium. Kids love it. Half-day activity.
- Jardín Botánico — Free botanical gardens with walking paths, butterfly house, and open green spaces. Perfect for a gentle family morning.
- Parque Arví — Nature reserve accessible by cable car (Metrocable). Hiking trails, zip lines, and fresh air at 2,500m altitude.
- Aeroparque Juan Pablo II — Amusement park with rides appropriate for young children.
- Swimming pools — Many apartment complexes and hotels in El Poblado and Laureles have pools. For kids, this is often entertainment enough.
- Parque de los Pies Descalzos — "Barefoot Park" in the city center. Interactive water features and sensory gardens designed for kids.
Pediatric Dental Tourism
An increasingly popular reason to bring children along: getting their dental work done at the same time. Colombian pediatric dentists offer the same quality of care at significantly lower prices.
- Orthodontics: Braces in Colombia cost $1,500–3,000 vs. $5,000–8,000 in the US. Invisalign: $2,000–4,000 vs. $5,000–8,000 US.
- Pediatric dental work: Fillings, crowns, and extractions at 60–80% less than US prices
- Consultation approach: Schedule a pediatric dental evaluation during your trip. If treatment is needed, it can often be started or completed during your stay.
Documentation for Traveling with Minors
International travel with children requires specific documentation. Don't skip this.
- Passport for each child — Required for all international travel. If your child doesn't have a passport, apply at least 6–8 weeks before your trip (expedited processing available for additional fee).
- Consent letter from non-traveling parent — If only one parent is traveling with the children, carry a notarized letter from the other parent authorizing international travel. This isn't always checked, but when it is, not having it can prevent you from boarding.
- Custody documentation — If you're a single parent or have sole custody, carry the custody order. Colombian immigration may ask for it.
- Medical information for children — Pediatrician contact info, medication list, allergy information, and insurance cards. Even if the kids aren't having procedures, having their medical info accessible in a foreign country is essential.
Recovery Houses and Family Accommodation
Not all recovery houses accept children. When booking, confirm:
- Do they accept children? — Some recovery houses have a "patients only" policy for clinical reasons (other patients recovering need quiet).
- Is there a separate sleeping area? — Kids need space to be kids. Sharing a recovery room with a post-surgical parent isn't ideal for either party.
- Alternative: Airbnb + nurse visits — Rent a two-bedroom apartment in Laureles or El Poblado ($50–100/night). Schedule private nurse visits (1–2/day at $40–80/visit) for your post-operative care. Kids have their own room, you have yours, and everyone has space.
- Alternative: Hotel with adjoining rooms — Book adjoining rooms at a family-friendly hotel. One room for the recovering parent with nurse visits; the other for the companion and children.
